Night Mother

Although that I think her MDQ is completely valid within the context of the play, I fee like it doesn't do enough to cover the most important aspect. This is why I think the better MDQ would be "Is Mama going to be able to listen to her daughter and let her go peacefully?" I think this is much more important as the core story within this play revolves around the mother and the daughter, not so much that if she is going to kill herself or not, as Jesse has already committed to that idea. It's really important to realize that this is more of a central point rather than if she is going to kill herself, because what the reader should be focused on is these last few moments that Mama is having with Jesse. These moments help to answer the MDQ by the end of the play because throughout all of their conversations, Jesse is trying to make her mom understand that she just wanted to tell her that she is going to kill herself, instead of doing it without her knowledge.

  1. I think you are absolutely right that the hypothetical director' s MDQ does not ask the most important question. Although I do think that Jesse is the protagonist and Mama is the antagonist trying to get in the way of her killing herself. Your blog setup is really lovely, by the way!
